You will travel around seven locations in Sam Maguire’s hometown of Dunmanway in West Cork, taking part in challenges and puzzles in his home, school, town and church. You will get to collect the visa stamps at each location as you go along the trail. When the passport is completed you will be able to apply to attend a Sam Maguire celebration.
Sam Maguire’s name is well known from the Gaelic Athletic Association’s (GAA) All-Ireland Senior Football trophy, which was presented in his memory to the association in 1928 by his friends in Ireland and England. As well as being involved in the GAA, Sam was also a significant figure in the cause of Irish freedom and was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood.
The seven locations on the trail:
- Mallabracka which was his home
- Dunmanway Model School
- Dunmanway Swimming Pool where you will find an exhibition of his life in England, the GAA and the IRB
- Dunmanway town square where the library and Sam Maguire statue are located
- Dohney GAA Club
- Dunmanway Historical Association
- St. Mary’s Church where you will see his grave and the Sam Maguire Visitor Experience
All locations are free to visit as you discover the facts about Sam’s life. You have the option to go swimming at the pool and go on the Sam Maguire Visitor Experience at St Mary’s Church, where a 20% discount is offered to holders of a Sam Maguire passport.
When the passport has been completed, you can apply online to go to a Sam Maguire celebration in the Parkway Hotel in Dunmanway, which will take place four times over the summer months. At the celebration you will get a photo with a replica of the Sam Maguire Cup and a past president of the GAA to complete your passport.
