Slí Na Rosann - Sli Dhun na nGall
An Clochán Liath, Co. Donegal
Free to visit
Embrace County Donegal’s expanse of mountain landscape, lake shores and coastal charm on Slí na Rosann, a 65km looped section of the longer Slí Dhún na nGall.

Moderate in grade, this scenic 65km looped trail starts and ends in pretty Dungloe.

It covers an area known as the Rosses, which lies between the western outliers of the Derryveagh Mountains and the zig-zag of Atlantic coastline in west County Donegal.

Slí na Rosann’s terrain consists mainly of boreens, some open ground which can be very wet, and quiet country roads that rise and fall as they cross open country. There are however, some busier roads with fast-moving traffic, so care is needed. The entire trail’s total aggregate ascent is 770m, with no significant climbs.

An idyllic route, it brings walkers through dramatic, remote and rocky landscape and boasts island views. It also passes through the pictorial town of Dungloe and the welcoming villages of Crolly, Maghery and Burtonport.

Walkers should note that some sections of the trail, particularly between Maghery and Crolly, are rather isolated with few overnight accommodation options.

Why we like it
  • The Slí na Rosann area’s wild and rock-scattered landscape is also home to more than 100 lakes, making it a sought-after angling spot.
  • This trail showcases stunning island vistas. One of these offshore islands, Aran, is accessible by ferry from Burtonport all year round. Its 15km walking route, Slí Árainn Mhór, circles the scenic island over roads and bog roads.
