The Wild Fowl Reserves in the natural valley in which most of north County Dublin lies, results in large areas of wetlands, where slow flowing rivers and the sea meet or where the sea itself retreats, creating wetland and broadmeadows.

There are a few wild fowl reserves in the north of County Dublin. These areas provide a natural habitat for a huge variety of sea birds and other flora and fauna. The major estuaries and wetlands are Broadmeadow at Malahide, where the sea's incursions have created a lake and wetlands; Rogerstown embraces the peninsula between Portrane and Donabate, an enchanting backwater with a store of wildlife; Baldoyle Estuary, which runs between the village of Sutton and the Portmarnock Peninsula.
