Galway’s Living Bog, Carrownagappul Bog, located in the rural hinterland of the market town of Mountbellew in County Galway, is one of the biggest Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) and one of the largest examples of remaining, restorable active raised bog in Ireland.

Carrownagappul Bog, near Mountbellew, is Galway's Living Bog. Designated as a Special Area of Conservation, it is one of the 12 bogs restored under the Living Bog Project. Measuring 850 acres, it contains fine examples of raised bog habitat and is one of the largest examples of remaining and restorable active raised bogs in Ireland.

At Galway’s Living Bog Interpretive Centre, an audio visual presentation will tell the story of raised bogs and their importance to the local community. Discover how they preserved cultural and environmental information giving valuable insight into local history as many ancient items have been preserved in Ireland's bogs. Learn the importance of active raised bogs to the environment today.
