Dido and Aeneas

Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas will be performed in the historic setting of St Carthage’s Cathedral, Lismore. This Baroque masterpiece features Paula Murrihy, Kelli-Ann Masterson, and Dean Murphy, with the Irish Baroque Orchestra and Nicholas McGegan.

Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas comes to life in the evocative surroundings of St Carthage’s Cathedral, Lismore, as part of Blackwater Valley Opera Festival 2025. One of the earliest and most celebrated operas, it tells the tragic tale of Queen Dido’s doomed love for the Trojan hero Aeneas. This powerful production features internationally Irish mezzo-soprano Paula Murrihy, with soprano Kelli-Ann Masterson and baritone Dean Murphy as Aeneas.

Accompanied by the renowned Irish Baroque Orchestra and conducted by Nicholas McGegan, these two exclusive candlelit performances promise an emotionally rich and musically exquisite experience in one of Waterford's most atmospheric venues.
